The Internet vs Millennials
The internet. If you were introduced to the infamous sound of a dial-up modem scream in 1993 and you were in middle school or elementary school you might be from Generation Y. Better known as a millennial, you were born between 1981 and 1996.
Unlike Gen Zers who were born after the internet, millennials had to learn about the internet when they were in late elementary school or middle school. Millennials knew about computers before the invention of the internet thanks to the Apple IIe computer. From playing simple computer games to solving math problems, millennials knew the basic functions of a computer before technology gave us the internet.
As new technological advancements kept emerging, millennials learned how to adapt and change to keep up. Society realized these children were our future and kept throwing new technology their way. One popular emerging technology was the rise of social media networks starting with AOL Instant Messenging. With the acceptance of this new way of communicating, millennials started favoring sending messages instead of talking on the phone or in person. "Although millennials are tech-savvy, some may be too dependent on technology for communication. Nowadays, staying on top of social media means always keeping your smartphone in hand. Texting and tweeting are norms in most aspects of life, but phone calls, emails and face-to-face communication are more common in an office" (Thompson, 2023).
